BOING

We bounced out of Spring and have landed in Summer. In honor of this giant plié, please enjoy this dance called BOING, choreographed by Mudita Nisker and Ellie Kerwin and performed by members of our Dance for PD® class. It was created and filmed virtually during the Shelter in Place in Spring of 2021.

This is an example of how resilient and inspiring these dancers are. Parkinson’s disease is a challenging condition that can be exhausting. It is a neurological disorder that needs to be managed through mindful choices. The right balance of food, medication, exercise and rest can continually change. So therefore, the need for flexibility, tolerance and patience, tempered with self-compassion is imperative. They have to listen to their bodies in order to get their bodies to do what they want. This is what professional dancers have in common with people with Parkinson’s disease. We can use imagery and musicality to create movement patterns and dance through sequences that ultimately cajole the body into doing what we want it to do. Living life with Imagery and musicality can be a whimsical way to BOING from one thing to the next.

Reflections

Thank you for a great year of virtual dancing!

This year we did our best to offer the usual variety of projects and showings, we created our first ever virtual Nutcracker, we shared an adult division Composition showing and a Matinee Munch performance for friends and family with “live” dancing on zoom, we held a virtual dance party week and dance party film highlighting class dances from Serendipity up to the Repertory Ensemble. Our summer kicked off with a Virtual Ballet Intensive for our teens and adults. We are excited to continue exploring dance as we transition to in-person offerings in the studios once again.

Thank you for dancing with us, for blooming with us and for hanging in with us.

If you would like to support our school, you can give to Danspace directly or make a tax-deductible donation through our resident company, dNaga. Click here to support our programs and please contact us if you’d like to support our school at a different amount.

Children’s and Youth Divisions

Fall enrollment is open! Save your spot by July 15.

This will help us plan ahead for classes that require pods and help us manage our waitlist.

We are planning to hold classes in person (most likely still masked), with the option of a virtual only class for those who want it. We are limiting in-person capacity at this time.

Lower Division classes (Serendipity, Pre-Ballet, Modern 1, Ballet 1a/b) have a maximum in person enrollment of 5 students OR virtual only enrollment with no class capacity. Upper Division classes (Ballet 2 a/b, Ballet 3 a/b, Ballet ⅘, Repertory ⅘, Modern Jazz ⅔, Modern jazz ⅘)  do not have a maximum capacity but will be assigned pods for hybrid format (combo of in person instruction and virtual instruction) once we know how many students are enrolled. We will evaluate capacity throughout the summer and notify you if the capacity increases and if pods are not needed.

You can choose to attend class virtually on Zoom instead of coming to the studio for any of the class offerings.

All studios have a door and window that open to provide air flow, plus HEPA air purifiers. Each studio is wiped down following each class. All students attending class in person must have a symptom and temperature check before entering the classroom. Symptom check is a verbal questionnaire, the temperature check is touch free. Masks are required regardless of vaccination status.

Adult Division

We’re excited to welcome you back to the studio this summer!

We updated our July series schedule to include Monday Intermediate Adult/Teen Ballet at 6pm (taught by KT Mower!).

Cardio Hip Hop is on hiatus until our fall series begins in September. Consider Feldenkrais as an alternate summer class for full body awareness (offered Sundays 12:30-1:30pm).

The Feldenkrais Method is a wide ranging system for understanding how human beings function and learning how to learn, using the body as its primary laboratory. This class explores movement that is then translated to other explorations of how our bodies move.

If you’re interested in enrolling in Feldenkrais (virtually or in-person) please email ASAP. The first class is on July 11.

If you’re interested in attending class in person, please contact us ASAP. In order to be considered for in-person classes, you must register for the full series so we can create pods of interested students. Registration on the day of class will be for our virtual format only.

Drop-ins and makeups are welcome virtually.
